1965 -- AGS Archives    Singapore becomes an independent republic within the British Commonwealth after seceding from Malaysia on August 9, 1965.   Ted Erikson, 37, of Illinois, became the first American swimmer to complete a round-trip crossing of the English Channel on September 21, 1965.
