VOYAGE FROM THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE TO GIBRALTAR:
March 31 - May 4, 2009 (35 days)
We invite you to follow in the wake of the early explorers and along the route of prosperous merchant ships of the 18th and 19th centuries on this epic,
32-day voyage that will ply a remarkable course along the grand scope of Africa, traversing the entire length of its Atlantic coast. It is an astonishing
itinerary aboard the elegant, all-suite, 57-cabin Corinthian II encompassing eleven nations, calling at ports and exploring destinations largely
unknown to most travelers. Embarking in Cape Town, we will explore practically every country along Africa’s west coast: South Africa, Namibia, Angola,
Gabon, São Tomé and Príncipe, Benin, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco, before the ship arrives at the Rock of Gibraltar, another of
the world’s great sea landmarks, ending the voyage in historic Seville, Spain. This is an unprecedented opportunity to observe, in the company of AGS
lecturer Christine Drake, an esteemed geographer and enthusiastic educator, the differences in ancient cultures and tribal customs, landscape and animal
life, from the towering dunes of Namibia to the remarkable wildlife of Gabon’s rainforests, from the markets of Ghana and Senegal to the medinas of Morocco.

HISTORIC CITIES OF THE SEA: A Voyage from the Spires of Seville to the Canals of Venice
May 4 - May 18, 2009 (15 days)
Join the American Geographical Society on a remarkable springtime voyage from Seville to Venice aboard the elegant, all-suite, 57-cabin Corinthian II, featuring a collection of some of the most historic cities
in the western Mediterranean. History is alive in the lands that border this Sea, and you will call upon legendary cities along the coasts of Spain, France, Corsica, Italy, Montenegro, and Croatia, where it seems every
cobblestoned lane or piazza preserves a memory of the seafaring Greeks, Romans, Moors, or Venetians. Spring is the ideal time to explore the Mediterranean: the days are sunny, the hillsides are covered in flowers,
and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. Pause to smell the jasmine outside the magnificent Gothic cathedral of Seville, and revel in the intricate beauty of the Alhambra Palace in Granada. Explore the
kaleidoscope of Barcelona’s remarkable architecture, and bask in the magical light of Aix-en-Provence, which was an endless source of inspiration to Cezanne and others. Stand in awe of the dramatic cliffs and blue
waters of Bonifacio, ponder the fates of Pompeii and Herculaneum, stroll through Kotor’s car-free historic center, marvel at the medieval splendor of Dubrovnik, and admire Split’s Palace of Diocletian—so vast that it
holds within its walls the city’s medieval town. There is no better way to approach these historic cities and towns than by sea—the same way they were experienced centuries ago by Roman magistrates and Venetian
merchant princes—in the modern comfort and elegance of a small ship like Corinthian II.
